Does Medicare cover Wegovy and GLP-1s?
Medicare coverage for GLP-1s comes down to the medical reason — here is exactly what is covered, what is not, and the new Bridge option.

Medicare's answer depends on why the medication is prescribed. Medicare covers GLP-1s for type 2 diabetes, for Wegovy's cardiovascular (heart-risk) indication, and for Zepbound's sleep apnea indication, all under Part D. Weight loss alone is excluded by law. To help bridge that gap, a new Medicare GLP-1 Bridge program launched in 2026. This is educational coverage information, not medical advice or a guarantee.
What Medicare covers and excludes
Covered under Part D: type 2 diabetes (all the diabetes GLP-1s), the cardiovascular indication for Wegovy, and obstructive sleep apnea for Zepbound. Excluded by law: medications used for weight loss alone. This is a long-standing statutory exclusion, not a plan-by-plan choice, which is why weight-loss-only coverage is not available through standard Medicare Part D. The Medicare GLP-1 Bridge
The Medicare GLP-1 Bridge is a program running from 2026-07-01 through 2027-12-31. It covers Wegovy, Foundayo, and the Zepbound KwikPen at $50 per month. It requires provider attestation and meeting BMI criteria. The Bridge is designed to give eligible Medicare members an affordable path to these medications during this window, even though weight-loss-only use is otherwise excluded from Part D. Frequently asked questions
Does Medicare cover Wegovy?
Medicare Part D covers Wegovy for its cardiovascular (heart-risk) indication. It does not cover Wegovy for weight loss alone, which is excluded by law — but the Medicare GLP-1 Bridge (2026-2027) covers Wegovy at $50/month for eligible members.
Why doesn't Medicare cover GLP-1s for weight loss?
Medicare Part D is prohibited by law from covering medications used for weight loss alone. This is a statutory exclusion, not a decision individual plans make. Diabetes, cardiovascular, and sleep apnea uses can still be covered.
What is the Medicare GLP-1 Bridge?
It is a program running 2026-07-01 through 2027-12-31 that covers Wegovy, Foundayo, and the Zepbound KwikPen at $50/month, with provider attestation and BMI criteria required.
Does Medicare cover Zepbound?
Yes, for obstructive sleep apnea under Part D. The Zepbound KwikPen is also included in the Medicare GLP-1 Bridge at $50/month for eligible members.
